From Nurse to Fitness Coach – A Journey of Health & Passion in McMurray, PA and Beyond
I have been a registered nurse since 1997, and while I have always loved working out, my true passion for health and movement began during my time as a traveling nurse. I’ve experienced adventures from hiking in Hawaii to exploring Colorado, strolling the steep streets of San Francisco, and embracing the fast-paced life of NYC on foot. Now, as a dedicated fitness coach based in McMurray, PA, I bring that passion to help clients in Peters Township, Canonsburg, Upper St. Clair, and surrounding areas achieve their health goals.
Along with my active PA Nursing License, I hold certifications as a Cycle Instructor, Personal Trainer, and Group Fitness Instructor through AFAA/NASM. My background in healthcare, combined with my love for fitness, fuels my training approach—one that prioritizes proper movement, injury prevention, and long-term strength. I am also a wife to Chris, who shares my commitment to a healthy lifestyle, and a proud mom of three athletic sons. They are my WHY. Everything I do, both inside and outside the studio, is driven by my love for my family and my belief that a strong, healthy life is the best gift we can give ourselves and those we love.

With diverse backgrounds—from spinning and barre to athletic training and group instruction—they are united by their commitment to personalized, effective fitness experiences.

I bring over 10 years of experience as a cycle instructor, along with a Spinning certification from Mad Dogg Athletics. My passion for fitness drives me to inspire and energize every class, helping others push past their limits and achieve their goals. Workout Anthem My go-to track is “I Lived” by OneRepublic. It’s a powerful anthem that fuels my drive, whether I’m leading a high-energy class, a 5K run, or marathon training. This song always provides the perfect motivation when the workout gets tough. Post-Workout Fuel After an intense session, I always reach for a refreshing glass of chocolate milk. It's my favorite way to refuel and recover, ensuring I’m ready for the next challenge. Off the Bike When I’m not teaching, I’m balancing life as a full-time professional in External Affairs at Capital One and as a devoted mom to my energetic one-year-old daughter. In my spare time, I enjoy pounding the treadmill and hitting the trails as I train for the 2025 Boston Marathon. I have a lifelong passion for dance, which naturally evolved into a love for Barre. I became certified to teach Barre in 2021 through a local studio. My background in movement and rhythm shines through in every class I lead, inspiring participants to embrace both grace and strength. Workout Playlist When it comes to powering through a session, Little Mix provides the ultimate high-energy tunes to keep everyone motivated. For those calming moments during stretching or yoga, I favor the mellow vibes of an acoustic cover—something that resonates with the ladies in my class! Post-Workout Fuel After an invigorating workout, I keep it simple and effective with plenty of water paired with a serving of Greek yogurt. This combination ensures I stay hydrated and nourished for the day ahead. Life Beyond the Studio Outside the studio, I treasure my role as a mom to my eight-month-old son. I balance family life with a career as an Engineer at a medical device company, where I actively participate in patient procedures, bringing precision and care to every aspect of my day. Kayla Long

I hold a NASM certification as a group fitness instructor and bring over four years of experience as a spin instructor to every class. My athletic journey began at the age of five on the softball field, leading me to play Division 2 softball at Seton Hill University. Today, I continue to stay active with slow-pitch coed softball in the PSL, demonstrating my deep passion for sports and movement. Workout Vibes My workout playlist is packed with high-energy beats. I love the infectious sounds of LMFAO, Red Foo, and Britney Spears—these tunes are my secret to keeping the momentum high, whether we're spinning, strength training, or just moving to the rhythm. Post-Workout Favorites When it's time to refuel, I reach for snacks that are both nutritious and delicious. Hummus paired with veggies or pretzel slims is my go-to. I also swear by a morning hack—adding Premier Protein to my coffee as a creamer for that extra protein boost. Life Beyond Fitness Outside the gym, I work as a dedicated marketing communications manager at Eaton. But my life isn't all about work—I love spending quality time with my coed softball team, family, and friends. Whether I'm exploring new restaurants, taking long walks in the park with my husband and twin baby girls, or enjoying local events and fairs, I’m all about making memories and embracing life's adventures. Here, I'm not just seen as an instructor but as a friend who supports and motivates. I bring over 20 years of experience in group exercise and personal training, with certifications as a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, NASM Nutrition Coach, AFAA Group Exercise Certified, NATA Certified Athletic Trainer, and Keiser Cycling Certified. My extensive experience ensures that every session is effective, engaging, and tailored to meet the unique needs of my clients. Workout Playlist Choosing just one favorite workout song is nearly impossible for me. I go through phases and love keeping my playlist fresh and dynamic to match the various moods of my workouts. Whether it's an upbeat tempo for cardio or calming tunes for cool-downs, my playlist evolves with my energy. Post-Workout Fuel After a great workout, my go-to quick snack is a rice cake topped with peanut butter and banana slices. After a long bike ride, I enjoy a cold glass of chocolate milk for its perfect combination of protein and carbs to refuel my body. Life Beyond the Studio When I’m not in the gym, I love to travel. Now an empty nester, my husband and I enjoy exploring new destinations—whether it’s traveling for work or visiting our kids, both of whom are in school in Colorado. Traveling gives us the perfect opportunity to recharge and explore new cultures. I’ve been a seasoned group fitness instructor since 2014, with NASM certification in Group Instruction. Over the years, I’ve led a wide variety of classes, including step aerobics, cardio kickboxing, Zumba (and Kids Zumba), Butts and Guts, Tabata, bootcamp, cycling, and even Mommy & Me sessions. My diverse experience, including Mommy & Me instruction, ensures a dynamic and engaging workout for every participant, especially for new moms looking to stay fit with their little ones. Workout Vibes When it comes to setting the tone for a high-energy session, nothing beats the empowering beats of Lizzo or Missy Elliott. Their tunes are my go-to for keeping both my energy and that of my class at its peak. Post-Workout Fuel After a great workout, I love to refuel with protein balls—especially those made with peanut butter—and a healthy protein shake. It’s the perfect combination of taste and nutrition to help me recover and recharge. Life Beyond the Studio Outside the fitness realm, I’m a proud mom of four—Colton (6), Owen (5), Tate (3), and Everlee (10 months). Family adventures are a big part of my life, whether it’s camping or exploring the great outdoors. Previously, I spent nine years as a middle school government teacher in Virginia. Today, my passion shines through in both my commitment to my family and my dedication to helping others feel confident in their bodies. I began my fitness journey in 1979 at age 4, lifting weights in my dad’s basement, sparking a lifelong passion for exercise that continues to drive my career as a certified fitness instructor. At JackHammer Fit, I channel this enthusiasm into every class, inspiring others to discover they are stronger than they think. Workout Anthem My go-to workout anthem is Metallica's "Enter Sandman," which fuels my training sessions and keeps me motivated through every rep and set. Pre- and Post-Workout Fuel My pre-workout routine includes coffee, a banana, creatine, and a protein bar to get me energized. After a great session, I refuel with eggs, fruit, skim milk, and protein powder to keep my energy balanced and my body recovering properly. Life Beyond the Studio Outside the studio, I embrace life as a devoted dad and husband. I love skiing, hiking, camping, enjoying beach days, and exploring new wines while dining with friends. I am a Yogafit Certified Yoga Instructor, Level 3 Certified Spinning Instructor, and hold certifications in Schwinn and Keiser Indoor Cycling, Running Specialist, Concept2 Rowing, TRX Strength Training, as well as being a NETA Personal Trainer and Wellness Coach. My passion for fitness drives me to inspire others to push their limits and achieve their personal best. Workout Anthem My go-to workout anthem is “Human” by The Killers, a song that fuels my energy and keeps me motivated through every session. Post-Workout Fuel After a challenging session, I refuel with a delicious Strawberry Protein Shake blended with spinach and cashew butter. It's the perfect balance of nutrients to help my body recover and recharge. Life Beyond the Studio Outside the studio, I work as a Physical Therapist Assistant, embrace life as a dedicated hockey mom, and nurture my passion as a bird enthusiast. I have 24 years of experience as a certified spin instructor, with certifications from Mad Dog, Reebok, and Keiser. My journey in fitness includes extensive corporate training while working with YMCA, LA Fitness, and Mecka Fitness. My passion for cycling and group fitness has allowed me to motivate and inspire riders of all levels. Favorite Workout Song With my ADD, my music preferences change frequently! As soon as I declare a song my favorite, it tends to lose its appeal. So, I keep my playlist evolving with fresh beats to keep my classes energized! Favorite Post-Workout Snack I’m currently obsessed with salt and pepper pistachios—salty, crunchy, and packed with protein! Life Beyond Fitness Originally from Chicago, I played collegiate volleyball at Northeast Missouri State, earning two All-Conference titles. After graduating, I pursued a career as a television anchor and reporter in Minnesota and Idaho. Later, my husband and I made a career shift, moving to Pittsburgh so he could attend law school while I pursued a second degree in teaching. For the past 22 years, I’ve been a digital media and communications teacher at Brentwood High School. At home, I’m a proud parent to two amazing kids, Aiden and Emme, and our beloved bernedoodle, Rocky. Outside of teaching and spinning, I have a passion for travel! This summer, we’re embarking on an incredible adventure to Egypt and South Africa for a safari. Why I Love Teaching at JHF Community is everything! The relationships I’ve built with JHF clients are unlike anything I’ve experienced at any other gym. It’s more than just a workout—it’s a family. I truly care for my clients, and they care for me, which makes every class a rewarding experience!

I have a strong foundation in fitness, holding certifications in barre and TRX, along with training in a variety of fitness disciplines. My diverse fitness background helps me bring exciting, tailored workouts to the table, ensuring each class meets different fitness levels and goals. Favorite Workout Music to Get Fired Up My favorite workout music changes each week, but one song that consistently gets me fired up is "Diva - Karmatronic Club Remix." It’s the perfect track to energize the class and set the tone for a fun and challenging workout session. Post-Workout Snack for Optimal Recovery After an early morning barre class or TRX training session, my go-to post-workout snack includes a healthy and balanced combination of protein, healthy fats, and fiber. I enjoy making a quick meal of eggs, half an avocado topped with everything bagel seasoning, and a handful of blueberries on Greek yogurt. This meal refuels my body and supports muscle recovery after a challenging workout. Balancing Work, Family, and Fitness In addition to my fitness journey, I am also a wife, mom, and Physician Assistant (PA). I spent 17 years working clinically in Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery and now teach PA students at Duquesne University. Go Dukes! My husband, two fantastic kids, and adorable rescue dog, Millie, keep me grounded and remind me of the importance of balance in both life and fitness.
